No, Butoh is not slow. No, Butoh is not inward-looking. No, Butoh is not a zone you enter or exit. No, Butoh is not danced in a specific way. No, Butoh is not accompanied by a specific type of music. No, Butoh does not communicate. Butoh is a way of experiencing one’s own body resonating in space. To tune this resonance box, we practice directing our attention toward sensations, a dialogue with gravity, and the wide-open channel of poetry. There is no “in order to” that mediates Butoh dance. We do not dance to feel better, to heal traumas, to get in better shape, or to build a community of like-minded people, etc., although all of that can be a collateral consequence of dancing as much as it would be from practicing any art. There is no end; there is a means without end. We are, we dance, and without waiting, we are lucky when mystery welcomes us. Mystery is any experience yet to be known. Your specific experience does not have to match mine. What unites us is having crossed the threshold, with vertigo, toward who knows where. The day we were born, we danced Butoh without even knowing it.

WITH WHOM?
«My teacher’s master encouraged him by saying: “Many will think you lack preparation, but go and share that which you love.” I feel called upon when hearing this anecdote. My teacher tells us: “Go and do something that can improve our common world.” I combine both things with all the knowledge that accompanies me. It is not about academic achievements or the list of names that might authorize it. It is always about the gesture: Sharing with love what I love to improve the world I live in. There is no pretense; there is abundance and necessity. There are numerous waters crossed, numerous curves in the road, and numerous pauses where it has been possible for me to nourish myself, see the world, and catch my breath. I am not a traditional dancer: I have a back as rigid as a beam, flexibility close to that of a rod, numerous voids here and there, and countless stones inside and out. I do not dance in spite of it; I dance with everything! the dance that requests me—and I give thanks for it. I place myself at its service with what I have in and between my hands, in and between my feet. More than enough, it is a gift. May I be able to share with you the secret of such liberation.» — Elena Arroyo.
